ISL

Today Saturday 12/11/2011 was the 2011 ISL Basketball Final, ISK vs. Rva. This game was the last game of the ISL season, a culmination of all the previous work we had put into the season game down to this game.  We had to meet the Varsity Football boys team and JV basketball girls at school at 7:30am to travel as a school to RVA which is an hour and thirty minutes away. This trip out to RVA was important because it was the last time I would ever travel to RVA to play basketball, arriving at the school we had plenty of time to warm up and get ready to play, we were able to get a lot of shots up and get our touch back. The gym was packed full with RVA fans which were very intimidating.

The game started at 10am the game began on a horrible note, we were unprepared and not confident in ourselves and in each other. As we have had so many injuries in the past we were down to just 8 people to play the final game. During the game we lost a few people to injuries which was frustrating because we were all one by one getting knocked out. Unfortunately we were unable to come back and win the game, it ended in an embarrassing loss. The game was the worst game we have ever played as a team, and I am extremely disappointed in the team as they were heavily reliant on me. As the captain of the Varsity team and as the point guard I am meant to dribble the ball up and down the court.  However if one person is meant to play a team game then that is where our difficulty came with this event.

The game benefited the RVA community as they got to watch a game against two opposing sides that have been rivals for years, and it just came to be that it was not our year.  If I could play the game over again, I would speak to my team and tell them about how I feel, that they expect to much of me. I would play harder than I ever have and defend as good as possible.  I would keep my teams spirit high and tell them all what I need them to do.
I am going to continue playing basketball as we have the upcoming ISSEA season, I will continue to push myself and expand my skills and pick my team up over and over until they are up to the standard that we need them to be. Hopefully we will see a championship in 2012 ISSEA!

Marich club

The golf tournament was one of fundraisers by
the marich club to raise money for the
upcoming bridge build in 2012 trip. The Activity was sponsored by multiple donors such as Airtel, Yara, Jave House and more. The most amazing price we received was a car from GM which we received a great deal for as the person who gets a hole in one would win some money, the car would go to the Bridging the Gap foundation and the Insurance money would go to our club. Each business paid to sponsor a golf hole which could cost anywhere from 35,000 to 70,000 shillings the gold course was donated to our club by the owner of the Windsor golf club Musoke.  Harmon Parker the CNN hero was in attendance of our event because he works with us in building the bridge. There was a raffle which was also part of this event, we got a bunch of cool prices from jewelry places and once again Airtel. Through this activity we hoped to raise as much money as possible through the tournament and the raffle ticket sales.
This activity was a culmination of a lot of word done through the year, the event was very stressful to organize as the sponsors wanted to have different signs and posters up at different holes, which we had to put up. We ran into a lot of trouble finding places to put the signs and logos on as the course is full of plants and trees, We also had trouble with the golf cart when transporting equipment from place to place as it kept breaking down. Also we had trouble organizing ourselves as half of us had to return back to the international day at school and some of us had a semi-final to play.
This activity in the long run would have a wonderful benefit to the people of the west pokot region, the money we raised at the golf tournament and the raffle will go to implementing small scale community based projects which will in the future help the community greatly. The projects we will implement will also be sustainable projects.
If I could change one thing about the project, I would organize it better and advertise it better so we would have had a lot more people who would attend. If I had time I would organize some music entertainment for the prize giving ceremony. The next time I have the chance to do something like this again I will be very excited and I would love to do this in cooperation with another club or a bigger foundation.

FINALS!

The varsity girls basketball team are in the finals, winning a thriller against Rosslyn 43-15 they girls have secured their place in the final against RVA on Saturday.
This game was my last ISL game of the season to be played at home, the game had a very rocky start as our team was demoralized after losing 3 players to injury. Leaving us with only 2 subs to rotate in. We had hoped to win the game however we did not expect to win by such as large margin once again as we are missing so many of our players.
This game was a mark of how well our team works together and what we can achieve and hopefully we will be able to show the same thing this Saturday at RVA. Going into this game i had intense nerves, i not to sure why that was, but im glad i was able to shake them off and lead our team to yet another win.
Saturday will present us with the toughest game we have played all season, this is the CLASH OF THE TITANS

Golf Tournament

Marich club, has been preparing for this huge fundraiser on the 11 of November. We have been working super hard to get as many sponsors and prizes as possible. The golf tournament is how we make the majority of our money to go towards our small scale community based projects that we will implement in the West Pokot region later on during the year.
With this activity i hope to run it smoothly as it is a huge event for this club, downer will be coming to play golf and we have been given prizes as big as a car to give away. The Golf Tournament will be attended by a lot of local media and important people in the community. We thankfully got the course for free and got companies to sponsor each hole providing us with some money.
This event is a huge deal for the club, and hopefully will go great, i have some worries as the event is on the same day as the international fair at school, causing conflicts for some people. We will not have a full club attending this event however we will do the best we can with those who make it.

Some pictures from the trip:)

Last Week of ISL season

Today marked the first day of the last week of the ISL season, my last ISL SEASON ever!
The season started early in august with a friendly against Rosslyn. Ironically they are going to be our semi final and if we don't win they will be our final game.

From this season i hoped to improve my leadership skills as well as my basketball skills, i believe that this far i have been able to accomplish my goals, i believe that i have improved my leadership skills tremendously, and my basketball skills, i have worked my hardest to improve my skills and i believe it has finally payed off. I hope to show through a win on Thursday that we as a team have improved and that we have learnt to play under pressure.

After the return of the ISSEA players we found out that our team is down to only 8 players, which means we have 3 substitutes. We will try our best to achieve the best out comes with the limited resources, we will try our best to win the trophy with a semi-final against ROSSLYN on thursday and HOPEFULLY a final against RVA on Saturday :)

Tuesday 1 November 2011

42- 14

NIS VS ISK Lions

This was very challenging game as it was the first game coming out of a entire week with no practice, we were unfit and unprepared however when playing against a team with very little organization, you just need to be confident in yourself and your team mates which is what we did and were able to come out on top.
This was our final game of the round robin league matches. We have finished in second place, meaning that we will meet Rosslyn in the our semi-final :)

45-43

RVA VS. ISK
this was the toughest game of our season, definitely a great game, really putting our teamwork and fitness to the test. the game unfortunately ended with a defeat but it was a fight to the end so i am not as upset as i would be if it had been a horrible game. We hope to see RVA in the finals in about week, hopefully this time we will come out victorious but only time will tell

ISK tournament

This past weekend, ISK held a 6 a-side football tournament as well as a volley ball tournament. As a member of the Athletic Council i was score keeping, Picture taking and selling snacks all day, our Girls volley ball ended the day with a 1st place trophy and our boys sadly losing out in the final came second over all. However it was a very successful day :)

Rosslyn tounament

The rosslyn tournament is a tournament which we attended last year and unfortunately got knocked out after 3 games, this year we went back in full force, beating every team in our pool and getting through the knock out games into the final, unfortunately we were met by the RVA A basketball team and ended up taking a horrible defeat 20-4 we came second. We improved tremendously from last year, however it still wasn't good enough to beat RVA we will play them again in 4 weeks and hopefully this time it will be better.

Tuesday 13 September 2011

38-15

RVA  B VS. LIONS that's another win!
although we came out victorious this is one of the most pitiful games we have ever played, i hope that is the last time that ever happens. Even though i am a bit disappointed it is important to celebrate.

The journey to Rva takes almost an hour and half, the rift valley is a sight we see every time we pass by it is remarkable. There is a picture of a tiny path under a railway in which we pass, legend has it if you touch the wall you lose. No one touched the wall, so im guessing the legend may be true

Thursday 8 September 2011

Friends Of Marich

31- 8

First ISL Basket ball game of the season.
ISK VS. ROSSLYN
September 8th, 2011
31- 8
This First game of the season is always a great accomplishment to win, last year at this time we saw no hope of winning against a team like Rosslyn, this game just signifies to us how far we have come and how hard we have worked. Looking forward to the next game :)

2011 ISSEA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

The 2011 ISSEA Basketball tournament was held in Ethiopia this year, it was a wonderful experience as we got to and reclaim for the 4th year in a row the title as the CHAMPIONS of ISSEA! as captain of this years team i was very proud and hope to see a 5 peat next year. This year was also wonderful cause we got to see our boys pull out a 2 peat.
Going into the tournament i held alot of pressure on my shoulders as we were walking in to defend a 3 year winning streak, we entered the tournament with only 9 players and quickly lost another to illness leaving us down to only 8 players. We were all fearful that we would let our legacy down however we all picked each other up and me as a leader had to keep picking my team up through the 3 days of intense grueling  basketball. After seeing the state my team was in, on the first day my goal was to keep their morale high and kick out another win.
As our coach was also the coach of the boys team we had Mrs, Thompson with us, she was a great help to us as she took care of us, she made sure we always had water and if anyone had any pain anywhere she made sure we had ice. Without her we would have all come back broken in many places. The ICS courts were rough courts that were not basketball friendly. An outside court made of cement scratched and hurt you every time you fell and a indoor court made from wooden floors that gave you splinters every time you fell.
This ISSEA tournament benefited our team as it lifted our spirits after having come second in our local season, we felt achieved and able. Us winning the tournament also helped ISK as our sports program is seen as accomplished. If i had the chance to go to ISSEA again i would not change a thing because it was perfect the way it was :)

2010 ISSEA TOURNAMENT

The 2010 ISSEA Football tournament was held in Uganda, this was my first Football ISSEA and was an incredible experience. Uganda was a beautiful location however the weather didn't stay to nice for us. Although we came 4th in the tournament and also lost a player to injury, it was very memorable.
The ISSEA football tournament is a meeting of east african schools to compete in a 3 day long intense tournament, the schools involved are AISJ,AISL,ISU,ICS,ISU,IST, and ISK. After the 3 days a winner emerges and sadly this year it was not us but it was new comers to the competition AISL.
Going into this tournament i hoped to improve my football skills and make new friends, fortunately for me my leadership skills were also needed as coach made me co-captain of the team on the second day of the tournament. This was a wonderful achievement for me as this was my first year playing football as ISK and less than 2 months into our season i had become co-captain of the team, i was very proud of myself.
We started out the tournament unstoppable defeating every team in the round robin, however on the 3rd and final day of competition one of our players Rebecca popped her knee out of place, shocking our entire team. This injury had such a profound effect on all of us that we were unable to play our games to our full potential, we ended up losing in our semi-final in penalties. Which was a great disappointing as we deserved to win the tournament having already defeated every other team.
If i had the chance to re-live the ISSEA i would do my best not to be so affected by the injury of Rebecca, and work hard to get my teams spirits lifted enough to win the final :)

2011 Visit to the Marich

The 2011 trip to Marich presented a new opportunity for the club, Friends Of Marich we were able to in partnership with Harmon Parker build a bridge and watch its opening and the significance it held for the local people of the west Pokot region of Kenya. The trip was about a week long and in this time we build a bridge and implemented other small scale projects such as installing a play ground for a school and providing another boarding school with enough food to last time sometime. By going on the Marich trip i wanted to explore the variety of culture you get exposed to in Marich and see what type of work Harmon Parker does and understand why he truly is a CNN Hero.
Our aims for the trip were to successfully install a bridge, learn about the pokot culture and learn about the living conditions in Marich. All of which we were able to do, learning how to gold sift and learning what a tedious and hard task it truly is helped us to understand how people in the region earn a living.
During the trip, we didn't encounter and major set backs all our plans fell through as planned and we were able to learn how to build a bridge and gain new skills through the process. The teachers that came with us on this trip were Mr. Currey, Mr. Robbins and Mrs. Thompson, in regards to the projects we did Mr. Currey and Mr. Robbins were the ones who ran that aspect of the trip, while Mrs. Thompson ran the more cultural side. The teachers taught us some new information about gold trading and the economic robbery going on in Marich. This drove us students to want to help the people even more, this coming school year of 2011/12 we will raise as much money as possible to implement more sustainable projects to help the people of the West Pokot.
If i could change one thing about the trip, it would be the knowledge i had before going into it, because going on the trip without and information made me wish that i had known the conditions of the people beforehand so i could have helped and provided more than i was able to. However all in all the trip was a great learning experience and i cannot wait to see what the future holds for the club

2011/2012

I believe the 2011/2012 school year poses some challenges for me. I created a few goals for myself that i want to achieve by the end of my last year in high school.
1. The first is to expand my horizons and think outside the box with my creativity in my club, academic and daily life
2. The second is to learn about myself though my time in isk and the time i spend in my community with either the community within isk or the greater community outside of the school and in the rural areas of Kenya
3. The third is to continue on the progress of last year and raise enough money to build a second bridge with the club i am now a co-chair of "Friends of Marich"
4. The forth and final goal for me is the most important as a senior, i would like to step into the role of a leader not only on the basketball court or in the meetings of my club but in high school as a whole i would love to leave a mark and be looked to as a leader.

This year i expect to open my self up to new experiences and challenges, i am excited and interested to see what this year of CAS brings to me and what i can do for my community.
